This is the ninth and final Prelude from a set titled “The Muses”. It is dedicated to Calliope, the Muse of eloquence and epic poetry. In some sources, she has been referred to as the queen or chief of the muses. At the time of its composition, I wanted this Prelude to represent the finality of the set, and also serve as a fitting final piece when performed. Thus, it contains furious technical passages and draws on piano repertoire from Scriabin and Rachmaninoff. It is set in the key of E flat minor, which is rather dark and well suited to this composition. It may be the most technically demanding Prelude of this set, and certainly its fiercest.
The stylistic influences for this set of Preludes is of the Romantic and Impressionistic periods. Both contain musical features and theoretical ideas that I enjoy using in my music. These features usually take the form of borrowed chords and heavy use of chromaticism.
The recording of this footage and audio was done at the University of Tennessee Knoxville, in the Powell Recital Hall. I am incredibly fortunate to have access to this beautiful facility. Additionally, the equipment used was rented from the School of Music, which enabled us to produce these videos at such high quality. This production would not be possible without the help of my close friends at Colored Glass Studios, each of them have worked tirelessly to edit the footage and recordings to create the best representation of my work possible.
