Last year, I faced the same PhD crossroads you’re at now, torn between chasing my passion project and the “safer” options.
Here’s what I learned (the hard way!) about picking a PhD topic that will carry you through the dark nights of data crunching:

🔥 Passion is your compass - but not your map.
I started out chasing the “most exciting” topic ( in my case, single-cell omics ), only to realize six months later that excitement alone doesn’t pay the bills—or secure that next grant. Passion lights the way, but you still need a plan. ( Single-cell experiments are relatively expensive, and while it's great to have those skills, I realised having expertise in other domains is needed too. )

💰 Look for grant magnets.
I switched to a related project when I saw consistent funding calls in my field ( in my case, Multi-omics integration ). That pivot meant I could attend conferences, collaborate with top labs, and even co-author a review paper without the stress of “what if my stipend runs out?”

🏭 Think beyond the bench.
My lab project had clear industry hooks, like building the data pipelines that biotech companies actually need. That alignment gave me an inroad to internships, summer schools, and an “exit strategy” if academia proved too narrow.

🔬 Scope it to success.
You might dream of solving the structure of every viral protein in one thesis - but trust me, break big ideas into achievable milestones, so you celebrate wins instead of burning out.
