After Finland’s accession to Nato earlier this year, Russia finds itself flanked in the west, north and east by the alliance.
Yet in the Arctic, Russia has an immense military strength combined with its control of the Northern Sea Route, basically the Arctic waters to which Moscow lays extensive legal claims.
Meanwhile China has outlined its ambitions to extend the Belt and Road Initiative to the Arctic by developing shipping lanes opened up by global warming, paving the way for Arctic shipping routes that would form a “Polar Silk Road”.
China over the past decade, it has pumped some $90bn into Russian Arctic fossil-fuel and mineral projects.
This July, a regular Chinese container-line service between St Petersburg and Shanghai had started and Russia made its first crude oil shipments to Asia.
But the most important project is Russia's Yamal liquefied natural gas project which is expected to supply China with four million tonnes of Liquified Natural Gas a year.
The summer route through the Arctic would cut off almost 20 days off the regular time using the traditional route through the Suez Canal.
