In a shocking escalation of the 2026 Iran War, the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena was torpedoed and sunk by a US Navy submarine approximately 40 nautical miles off Galle, Sri Lanka. The vessel, which had recently participated in India’s MILAN 2026 naval exercise in Visakhapatnam, was returning home when it was struck by a Mark 48 torpedo. Sri Lankan Navy personnel, responding to a dawn distress call, recovered 87 bodies and rescued 32 critically injured sailors. The Indian Navy also deployed aircraft and INS Ikshak to support the humanitarian efforts. This marks the first US torpedo sinking of an enemy ship since World War II, turning the Indian Ocean into a sudden conflict zone.
