The forward medical outpost shook as the Arctic whiteout slammed into it, wind hammering the steel walls like distant artillery. Fluorescent lights flickered overhead, blinking in and out as if the building itself was losing the will to stay awake. Radios spat nothing but static, a harsh, endless hiss that told everyone the same thing without words. They were alone.
A Navy SEAL Senior Chief stood near the center of the ward, jaw set, eyes hard. He didn’t raise his voice when he said the pilot was dead. He didn’t need to. The sentence landed heavy, final, and no one argued it. Somewhere behind him, a younger SEAL exhaled sharply and muttered that without airlift, they were finished.
Along the far wall, a nurse stood quietly with her back to a supply cabinet. Lieutenant Grace Holloway, Army Nurse Corps, late twenties, her parka slightly too big, her hands folded loosely at her sides. No one looked at her. Not really. She wasn’t mocked yet, which somehow felt worse. She was dismissed without effort, like furniture in the room.
Blood soaked through fresh gauze on a gurney nearby. Breath fogged the air. The wind screamed through the seams of the building, relentless and impatient. Someone broke the silence with a flat, tired line. Medical stays medical. We don’t need false hope.
It sounded like a door closing, and in that moment, everyone seemed to agree they were already dead.
