Rosy-Finches are a unique group of alpine finches found only in Asia and North America. There are three North American species that are known to form large nomadic flocks in winter. . The mountains of central New Mexico are one of the few easily accessible places where all three species are known to regularly winter together. This unique location has given Rio Grande Bird Research Inc. (RGBR) an amazing opportunity to learn more about these understudied bird’s wintering ecology. Since 2004, RGBR researchers have learned that many Rosy-Finches will often return to the same wintering site throughout their lives and that west-facing cliffs are particularly important for roosting sites. Additional research recently added also includes the use of radioisotope analysis to better understand where these birds are breeding and the use of Radio Frequency Identification tags for tracking.
