What the Literary Canon was Built to Value (and Exclude) & Why

Описание: In this video, I talk about what the literary canon was built to value and to exclude. And why looking at this - thinking about this - is political.

The lives we live are all born of a structure - our society. Our society - in the US… and in many other parts of the world — was shaped by a very particular group of people: White, wealthy males.

They shaped society to serve them best so they could create the world they envisioned - with themselves in mind.

Those who were women, people of color, disabled in some way, were either used to help build their vision and/or shoved to the edges of society - marginalized.

These revered traits of the canon—through four examples—didn’t become “literary” by accident. They reflect the values of colonial, patriarchal power structures that shaped publishing, education, and criticism.
