Visiting the charming town of Las Galeras and its magnificent tropical beach while you travel through the Samaná Peninsula, in the Dominican Republic is a must do.
The road to this small fishing community 28 km northeast of Samaná ends at the beach. So does everything else, metaphorically speaking. One of the great pleasures of a stay here is losing all perspective on the world beyond – even the beautiful and isolated outlying beaches seem far away.
Being outside the touristic areas, this town has preserved its unique Dominican style with little houses surrounded by coconut trees. The town is bathed by the sea in a beach with some boats property of the locals. The name of the town is owned to the fact that, during the second half of the 16th century, there used to anchor two galleys send by the King of Spain to curtail illegal trade as pirates used to spend time in the town.
