I’ve taken a lot of courses to learn how to garden plan, and I’ve condensed the information into a 4 steps. Get yourself a journal and watch your progression after following this garden plan.
It’ll save you time, money and increase your harvest.
Step 1: pick your plants
Make 4 lists:
1. What plants are practical for your gardening goal?
2. What are your MUST HAVES?
3. What seeds do you already have?
4. Based on list 1,2,3, what do you need to buy?
5.
Step 2: Evaluate your space
Know your zone, hours of sunlight, square footage of grow zones, micro-climates, soil type.
Step 3: Map it out
Draw your area to use for planning. Mark down your hours of sunlight in your peak season and your shady areas.
Step 4: timing and placement
Now that you know your space and your environment, do some quick math to figure out how many plants you need for the space you have. Plan for a bit extra if you are succession planting.
Draw your plan for this year on your map.
Group your plants together by their preferences for water/sun.
Think about companion planting possibilities.
Think about Pests! Don’t place plants together if they attract the same pests.
Chart:
Seeding date, transplant date, temperature when hardening off, major weather changes (heavy rain, heat waves, first frost date, last frost date, storms), water restrictions, pests (dates and plants affected), harvest date.
