Initially brought by former slaves from the Bahamas, it moved into the Florida Keys and eventually up the Gulf Coast to the newly-established city of Tarpon Springs many years before Greek sponge fishermen and their families immigrated to the area along with their diving equipment. Tarpon Springs' sponge harvesting history and its Greek culture are the main attractions that bring thousands to the small city every year. Enjoy!
