I love this tune, so after hearing a cracking cuban version with pretty much no kit on it, there seemed only one thing to do... Delving into cuban music was a lot of fun! There are so many Cuban/Latin rhythms to explore, so many flavours to play with...

There's also some excellent percussion on this backing track, so finding inspiration wasn't hard. I chose a core drum beat that has been used across multiple Latin genre's and fusion tracks down the years. I think it really sets the song alight.

More cowbell needed! I loved chucking the cowbell on the kit for this tune. It really cuts through any arrangement, and gives a real driving force to any part that you play. I think I play differently when playing that compared to when I'm playing the ride. Most likely because there's less sonic space taken up with the cowbells sustain as it is shorter. You can play more and get more definition out of each note.

One thing I challenged myself to do with this performance, was to play with a striped-down kit. I find this forces you to be more creative with the rhythms you already have in your head. It also pushes you explore more of the vast tonal possibilities of the limited drums and cymbals you have at your disposal.
