The Crazy MYSTERY Of The Escape From Alcatraz
Frank Morris was orphaned at the age of 11. He spent his childhood in and out of different foster homes & was convicted at 13 yrs old for substance possession and robbery.
He was actually very smart & had an IQ of 133 which made him the top 2% of the population.
He was later arrested in Miami Beach.
He had a history of prison escapes and previously escaped from a different prison & was recaptured and placed in Alcatraz in 1960.
Brothers Clarence and John Anglin were inseparable as children.
At age 14 Clarence was caught breaking into a service station. Him and his brother started robbing banks.
In 1958, they were given 35 year sentences. They were originally placed in another prison but after escape attempts ended up in Alcatraz.
Allen West was arrested over 20 times prior to being placed in Alcatraz. After an escape attempt from a Florida prison, he was transferred to Alcatraz in 1957.
Dec 1961 - they were all in adjacent cells & started planning their escape. They actually all already knew each other from previous stints in prison.
So how on earth were they planning to escape from a maximum security prison on a literal island in the middle of the sea?
A key part of the plan was to use ventilation ducts under sinks in their cells. They had to widen these with blades and metal spoons they stole from various parts of the prison. They also put together an electric drill using a motor from a vacuum cleaner from the prison.
Through the ventilation duct was a corridor and down the corridor was a secret workshop they were using to build things to help with the escape such as a raft.
Interestingly they had access to reading materials in prison including mechanics magazines. They actually used one of these magazines which included instructions of how to make life jackets.
They stitched together 50 raincoats to make a raft.
They now had to work out how to not raise suspicions when they did escape and also while they were in the workshop - they had to make it look like they were still in their bed. They created paper mache heads so that at a distance it would look like they were still there.
On the evening of June 11 at 10:30pm
Frank and the two brothers climb through the ventilation duct and through the other side.
When Allen West attempted, he found that the cement around his vent had hardened which made it very narrow.
By the time he managed to re-widen the hole, the others had left without him so He went back to bed.
The other 3 had climbed onto the roof by now. They had to then climb down a 50 foot kitchen pipe & climb 2 barbed wire fences to get to the water.
They made a make shift foot pump to blow up their raft. They were attempting to travel 2 miles to Angel Island where they would finally be free.
Thanks to the dummy heads, The prison officers didn’t discover the men had gone until the next morning. When the guards did notice, they locked down the prison.
There was a huge search over the next week & on June 14th, a paddle was found floating 200 yards off the southern shore of Angel Island.
On June 21, raincoat material was found on a beach which may have been the remains of the raft. A deflated life jacket in the same material was also discovered shortly after.
No other physical evidence of the men has ever been found.
Allen obviously didn’t manage to escape and fully cooperated with police. He wasn’t charged with any part of the escape plan.
Family members of the Anglin brothers occasionally received postcards and messages over the years. Most were unsigned and one was signed "Jerry", and another "Jerry and Joe”. They also got a Christmas card in 1962, it said "To Mother, from John. Merry Christmas.”
The Anglin brothers mum also got anonymous flowers every mothers day until she died in 1973.
Two tall, unusual women in heavy makeup also reportedly turned up at her funeral.
Several tips over the years have come in to say a man who looked like Clarence Anglin may be living in Florida.
A man called Fred Brizzi, who grew up with the Anglin brothers claimed he bumped into them in Rio de Janeiro in 1975. He had photos with the men.
In January 2020, AI specialists used facial recognition techniques to conclude that the men in the photo were John and Clarence Anglin.
Robert Anglin, the brother of the pair, apparently told people before he died in 2010 that he’d been in contact with John and Clarence until 1987.
In 2018, the FBI confirmed they’d received a letter apparently written by John. The writer stated that Frank Morris died in 2008 & Clarence died in 2011. He was asking to surrender in exchange for cancer treatment. We still do not know if this was a genuine letter off John or a hoax.
