উচ্চ দাবদাহ এবং খরা থেকে পানির ঘাটতি, ইরাকের গম উৎপাদনকে হুমকির মুখে ফেলেছে। ইতোমধ্যে পানির অভাবে কম ফলন এবং ছোটো আকারের শস্য উৎপাদনের মত সমস্যা ভোগ করছে দেশটি।
চাহিদার সমস্ত পানির জন্য টাইগ্রিস এবং ইউফ্রেটিস বা ফোরাত নদীর ওপর নির্ভরশীল ইরাক। প্রতিবেশী তিন দেশ তুরস্ক সিরিয়া এবং ইরান নদী দুটির উজানে বাঁধ দেয়ায় কমেছে এসেছে পর্যাপ্ত পানির সরবরাহ।
এমতাবস্থায় কৃষি সেচে পঞ্চাশ শতাংশ পানি প্রত্যাহারের নির্দেশ দেয় দেশটির সরকার। যার সরাসরি প্রভাব দেখা যায় স্থানীয় গম উৎপাদনে।
