THE STATE OF LIRA-KITGUM ROAD SECTION IRKS LIRA RESIDENTS

Erute North member of parliament and the community in Lira have expressed concern over the poor state of Lira – Kitgum road.
They have appealed to the Uganda national roads authority and the ministry of works to reign on the GULSAN a contractor currently mandated to do forward maintenance of the road.

This is Lira – Kitgum road. Some spots are eaten up narrowing the road to less than 3m.

The stretch is part of the 191kms Rwekunye-Apac-Lira-Puranga road. The road was handed to GULSAN company for reconstruction which has already begun from Apac.
However, Locals and the area member of parliament for Erute North have expressed bitterness in the poor state of the stretch from Lira to Puranga. The contracted company was to do forward maintenance which the area member of parliament says it’s not being implemented. Locals say the eaten road have become death traps.
Station engineer, Alfred Okucu confirmed receipt of the complaints. He says the road was handed to the contractor. Okucu appealed for calm as means are being devised to make the road motorable.

He however, says the station he heads doesn’t have powers to prevail over the contractor.

In the wake of the current incidences of road accidents the area member of parliament wants the ministry to reign of the contractor to improve on the road.
Locals want the roads improved to reduce on the motor accidents.
