RIP John (Brittle-Dick) Glascock who died on this date in 1979 at the tragically young age of 28. John always makes it onto my Top 5 Favorite Bass Players list even though I’m only familiar with an album, or two, of the work that he did with Tull, primarily, “Songs From the Wood” and “Heavy Horses”. His clean, articulate sound and style was something I always gravitated toward, even though I’ve always been a hardcore finger-style player and he played with a pick. And anyone who has the bravado to wear fingerless gloves, as he did in the “Heavy Horses” video, is a hero in my book.

The song is called “Elegy” and it was written by, keyboardist, David (Dee) Palmer, and is off the Jethro Tull album, “Stormwatch”, which came out in 1979 and featured, in part, the Late, Great, John Glascock on bass. I’m playing the mighty Wal which, some may know (and some may be surprised to hear) that, I no longer have. I’ve gotten many requests to do a video on the collection of basses that I’ve accumulated over the last 2-3 years. I’ve been thinking a little harder about doing that, but to focus more on why I bought the bass as opposed to a technical review of the instrument. Anyway, at least I’m thinking about it……and it would have to be one bass (or brand) at a time. There’s no way I could come up with anything coherent in one sitting. The thing that’s been most off-putting about doing a video like this is that it would come across as boastful, but I think I may be to the point where I can personally deal with that.

I just learned that it is Martin Barre’s birthday today as well. Martin was born on this date in 1946. As an added bonus I will give you a link to an “unpublished” video of “Hunting Girl” that I did a while back using the Wal. I posted the Spector version because I thought it sounded better. I will also attach it in the text area of the Spector version.
