Standard techniques for simulating deformable objects, such as Finite Element Methods, are computationally expensive. We investigated the use of computationally cheaper methods. "Meshless Deformation by Shape Matching" proposed by Mueller et al. in 2005 is such a technique, but suffers from several shortcomings. We improved the algorithm such that deformations are volume preserving (for incompressible fluids and tissue), soft objects can be cut, and we improved numerical stability.
