Balen Shah is a Nepali politician, rapper, structural engineer, and philanthropist who became widely known after being elected as the Mayor of Kathmandu in May 2022. His full name is Balendra Shah, and before entering politics, he had made a name for himself in Nepal as a successful engineer and an independent rapper.
Balen Shah gained significant public attention during the mayoral election, running as an independent candidate and appealing to the youth and those dissatisfied with traditional political parties. His victory was seen as a shift toward new and independent leadership in Nepal's political landscape, as he beat out candidates from the major established parties. Shah has been noted for focusing on urban development, infrastructure, waste management, and governance transparency in Kathmandu.
Before his political career, Shah was also recognized for his involvement in the Nepali underground rap scene, where he often expressed social and political issues through his music.
