Text - Der Schulmeister – The Schoolmaster by Georg Philip Telemann (1681-1767) English Singing edition adapted by Ronald Hedlund @Copyright June 1, 1997
1. Recitative
Attention - you children!
Do you want to learn?
A solemn vow I’ve taken
To teach you music you’ve forsaken.
First I will sing. Then it’s your turn.
C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C
That is the fundamental scale,
That’s all there is to say.
Some who are so blasé,
And don’t know what it’s all about,
Sing thus: do re mi fa sol la
And call that opera!
Ah no, there is no music here to savor,
Like when you drink a glass of water without flavor;
So words help out the sounds we hear,
Then the glass becomes a glass of beer.
2. Aria
When the Schoolmaster sings,
It sounds so wonderful.
3. Recitative
I think that was a great Masterpiece,
I don’t believe that Telemann could write
So well, although he thinks he can.
Yet I don’t see my luck increase,
Since to my greatest annoyance,
Along comes a pig to spoil the performance;
It’s at the bar line you don’t meet,
Due to that bad thing - the beat,
Because you rascals don’t retain it,
Whether I sing or explain it.
It is good training for the smartest,
Let’s try a composition by an artist;
Composed by the great Hammerschmidt
you see;
It goes just like a fugue; now sing it after me.
Ceciderunt in profundum,
No, No! You children did not keep the beat!
Now I’ll begin again, and please don’t stomp your feet.
Ceciderunt in profundum, summus Aristoteles,
Plato et Euripides -
Well, what is wrong? Where are you? Are you asleep?
Indeed! You are just like a flock of sheep!
Once more! First I will sing it all alone,
Then in two parts you will intone!
Ceciderunt in profundum, summus Aristoteles,
Plato et Euripides....
4. Recitative
That was in the key of C,
And about antiquity.
If you followed my instructions to the letter,
It would have sounded better,
You must obey the laws,
And make a proper pause!
It’s no small wonder then,
That I must take my medicine,
I’m feeling under the weather.
First you yell all together,
Then you don’t know your part,
You bring me much displeasure!
Ah me, my trembling heart,
I scarcely now can beat the measure.
No matter, with music we are blest,
It fills our hearts with joy sublime.
I’ll try again just one last time,
To sing for you my best!
5. Aria
Who does not love this kind of music?
Who does not love Baroque music?
He will remain a donkey.
