It began with a patent back in 1873. A way to add rivets to denim work pants, making them more durable for a tough day in the mines. These work pants are what we now call blue jeans, 501® Originals. They're still tough.

And jeans may feel stiffer after they're washed if any detergent residue remains on the fabric. Levi's suggests washing its jeans no more than once every 10 wearings or so. Always use cold water to prevent shrinking, and hand wash denim if you can.
