Hyperfocus is that deep dive into something you’re passionate about, where hours fly by, and the rest of the world fades away.
People with ADHD often exhibit hyperfocus when working intently on things that interest them. This phenomenon is believed to stem from abnormally low levels of dopamine, a neurotransmitter in the brain’s frontal lobes. This dopamine deficiency makes it hard to “shift gears” to take up boring-but-necessary tasks.
But there’s nothing inherently harmful about hyperfocus. In fact, it can be an asset. Many scientists, artists, and writers have channeled it into groundbreaking work.
