Albanese splits up gun law and hate speech bills after Greens criticism

The federal government has announced it will split up the sweeping omnibus bill on gun laws, hate crimes and other reforms, after both the Coalition and the Greens rejected the bill ahead of parliament returning next week.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Saturday that proposed gun law reforms would be split into a separate bill to ensure their passage, after the Greens announced that they would support the gun reforms but wouldn't back the other proposals.
Greens Senator Mehreen Faruqi said they "will not be party" to the hate speech reforms since it “divides communities and people along religion”.
"We will not be pushing through any other parts of the legislation because they are fraud, faulty and flawed, and they could even be weaponised against people who are criticising governments for human rights abuses, including Israel's genocide in Gaza," she said.
