DOJ disbands foreign influence task force, limits scope of FARA prosecutions

Описание: One of Attorney General Pam Bondi’s first actions after being sworn in was disbanding the FBI’s Foreign Influence Task Force—a unit focused on countering foreign efforts to influence U.S. policy and elections.

In a memo, Bondi said the DOJ is shifting resources to address "more pressing priorities" and to limit the "weaponization and abuse" of prosecutorial discretion.

The DOJ is also narrowing the scope of FARA prosecutions, stating that charges under the Foreign Agents Registration Act will now apply only to cases involving espionage-like conduct by foreign government actors.

Established in 2017 under then-FBI Director Christopher Wray, the task force investigated foreign influence operations, including election interference and social media manipulation.
