"The patient currently has the most severe form of cardiopulmonary presentation, and she is receiving what is called, or rather what is the final stage of supportive care: extracorporeal circulation for artificial oxygenation. She has an artificial lung, a blood diversion, which we hope will allow her to get through this difficult period while her lung, which is being attacked by this virus and whose vascular wall has been  damaged, recovers."

STORYLINE:
A French woman infected with hantavirus after being repatriated from the MV Hondius cruise ship has the "most severe form of cardiopulmonary presentation," a doctor at the Paris hospital treating her said Tuesday.

Xavier Lescure, an infectious disease specialist at Bichat Hospital, said she was receiving “the final stage of supportive care.”

Health Minister Stephanie Rist said four other French nationals repatriated from the ship had tested negative and were doing well.

She said 22 French contacts linked to infected people evacuated from the ship had been identified, contacted, tested and hospitalized or were being hospitalized.

Rist said positive cases identified so far were exclusively MV Hondius cruise passengers and that there was no evidence of wider circulation of the virus in France.
