St. Gemolo was a young soldier, beheaded in 1047 for his faith. According to legend, he went to the place where the abbey now stands to be buried, bearing his own head in his hands. Impressed by the solitude and the strategic location of the place, in the second half of the century three priests from the Milan Duomo decided to found a monastery.
Its priory had complete sovereignty over the valley and the abbey was characterised as a small monastic dominion. Feudal power was expressed well by the architecture, fortified with a double masonry ring and some towers, unfortunately destroyed later.
St. Gemolo's wealth began to decline in the 1400's. Then, in 1511, the building was burned and plundered by Swiss troops. It was later restored and equipped with a baroque façade toward the river, but the monastic community progressively died out and the abbey was finally sold to private individuals in 1894.
