Hello neighbors, it's Brad here at etrailer and today we're taking a look at the Blue Ox Avail tow bar on a 2022 Freightliner S2 RV. The Blue Ox Avail is definitely one of the more heavy duty tow bars that we offer here at etrailer and there's not a whole lot of frills that come with this one as far as cable management, but overall this is a really heavy duty, solid tow bar that will last you a long time. And one of the best part about it is it's going to be a non-binding tow bar. And what that simply means is when your arms extend while towing, that's what they're supposed to do. But when you go to unhook, sometimes that's when it gets tricky. Your older tow bars, a lot of times you have to be on perfectly flat level ground to really get those to unbind and draw those arms back to unhook your vehicle.
And most campsites that you've been to, I can almost promise are not very level, and that's where non-binding comes into play. Once it's locked and you need to release the arm, it's as simple as pushing the lever down. It's gonna allow you to draw those arms back, keeping it nice and easy to use every single time you hook up and unhook up. Now, I mentioned that it's heavy duty and that's because it has a 10,000 pound weight capacity. So on something like a Wrangler, that's gonna be more than enough.
But if you ever plan on moving to a larger vehicle, this should be able to hold that weight. We're starting to see a lot of 3/4-ton trucks that are getting flat towed and this is gonna be able to hold up to that as well as anything that's much lower. It's better to have more weight capacity than less. Some of the other features that this has that's really nice is it comes with safety cables, so that's one less component that you'll have to pick up. It also comes with a pin and clip, so you'll be able to drop it into your hitch.
Looking at ours here today, it's overall a nice looking tow bar. It's got these rubber boots that cover up the arms, which will keep it nice and clean. We do have Blue Ox adapters already on here, and that's because we have a Blue Ox base plate. But not to worry, if you have a Roadmaster base plate, a Demco, etrailer, whatever it may be, you can get adapters for these to attach to your base plate. So not to worry, you will be able to make this work with your base plate.
Now it does have two holes in the shank, so you can kind of determine how close or far away. So if you have anything on the back of your RV, you can kind of space that out a little bit. And going along with that, this is one of the wider or longer tow bars that you'll see out on the market. And that's actually a benefit. A lot of times it allows you to get to some wider base plates, a little bit easier and attach to 'em. But also the further back that the vehicle is, generally it tows a little bit better, it'll track a little bit better. So this will give you potentially some better turning radius compared to some of the other shorter tow bars. A good rule of thumb for all tow bars is making sure that they're as level as possible. And as you can see here today, we have a high-low adapter. This is a six inch drop from Curt that we used, and that's because the hitch on the RV and the base plate are two different heights. So you're gonna wanna check your base plate height right at the center of the pins of where the arms are, and then the center of the pin on the hitch on the RV, compare those and it needs to be within a three inch window and that's gonna keep stress off your tow bar long term and make sure that it's gonna really just tow down the road safely. So if you need a high-low adapter, that's something you're gonna want to pick up. And also an extra pin and clip so you can get that attached. Now when you are ready to unhook your vehicle and you're all done towing, it's pretty easy to get taken off and also stow. So I'll start by getting my safety cables taken off here. And I will say the included safety cables is a very large clevis-style hook. So that's nice 'cause a lot of hitches that we find on RVs, the safety chain loops are pretty large and it's hard to get just small quick links on there. These should be big enough to go around them. It gets a little bit tricky when you hook it up to the base plate, but it's gonna hook up no problem. So we'll get these off,
