Tehran Tollbooth: Iran Charges Ships Near Strait of Hormuz | $2M Toll per Tanker

Ship owners must navigate a complex process, informing intermediary companies linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) about cargo, destination, and ownership. Iran charges a “toll” of at least $1 per barrel, with fees rising based on the operator’s perceived friendliness. Payments are made in Chinese yuan or cryptocurrency.

The average toll for a single oil tanker is about $2 million. IRGC boats then provide an escort through the corridor. Analysts estimate the system could generate up to $500 billion over five years. This informal and currently illegal mechanism is considered Iran’s biggest gain from the recent conflict.
