As we continue to monitor the latest developments this tax season, we do have the latest release date for the next batch of Tax Refunds scheduled to go out so we will take a look at that well as a growing number of taxpayers indicating their refunds have been reduced this year. We are also going to look at an issue causing refund delays for some taxpayers some of whom are not even aware they are impacted by this problem. Now the latest developing news this tax season is that the next batch of tax refunds is scheduled to be transmitted to banks nationwide on Wednesday, March 23rd. Included in this batch are refunds from tax returns that were submitted as far back as January. So, we continue to see movement of refunds finally going out for those early filers and those waiting over 21 days. We continue to hear from growing number of taxpayers who are indicating their tax refunds have been reduced in some cases significantly. Now one of the biggest causes of this development has to do with taxpayers not properly accounting for last year’s advance child tax credit payments on their tax returns as well as indicating they did not receive the latest stimulus payment when the IRS shows they did. The IRS will send out a letter before the refund is issued detailing the exact reason. For those continuing to wait for their refunds there are several different scenarios in which you may fall under. If you are seeing this message with tax topic code 151 listed, then there is a potential issue that has been identified with your tax return. If you are able to view your tax transcript code 420 that is an indication of an audit. If you are seeing code 424 then your return has been set aside for further examination but does not necessarily mean you will be audited. Now another problem that is causing delays in the issuing of some of those tax refunds is Identity verification is needed. Now when ID verification is needed the IRS generates one of several letters such as the 5071C like seen here, but it is being reported that a number of affected taxpayers are not receiving this letter, so they are not even aware this is the issue holding up their refunds.
