This is another great song that a posted part of before. Here (just about) the whole thing.
From Songfacts:
Band bassist Rick Danko took the lead on this heartache country ballad full of the loneliness that comes after a breakup.
Robbie Robertson, the band's lead guitarist and primary songwriter, explained the tune's meaning in a 1975 interview with Robert Palmer.
"I thought about the song in terms of saying that time heals all wounds," he said. "Except in some cases, and this was one of those cases."
I produced a ‘full band’ acoustic version of this years ago - audio only. Amazing vox. I might find it and publish it here sometime.
Chords
Note: for the funky G and C riffs, just hammer-on 5th string/2nd fret when in G and hammer-on 4th string/2nd fret when in C. Together they sound good.
Don’t be afraid to play the riff ‘dirty’ - in other words hit other strings around it. That gives it a rougher feel that suits Robbie’s stuff (and Neil Young stuff).
