Fateh Jerusalem – Umar ibn al-Khattab
In 637 CE, during the caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab, the Muslim army peacefully captured Jerusalem from the Byzantine Empire after a brief siege. The Christian Patriarch Sophronius agreed to surrender the city on the condition that Caliph Umar himself would come to receive it. Umar traveled from Medina to Jerusalem and accepted the city's keys in a humble and respectful manner.
He ensured religious freedom for Christians and Jews, and he signed a historic agreement known as the "Pact of Umar", guaranteeing the safety of the city's inhabitants and their places of worship. Umar also chose not to pray inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre to avoid its conversion into a mosque, showing great respect for Christian beliefs.
This event marked a key moment in Islamic history and showcased Umar’s justice, humility, and leadership.
