STORYLINE:
Emperor Naruhito of Japan, Empress Masako, viewed displays of Japanese items from the Royal Collection at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday, as part of their state visit to the U.K.

King Charles III welcomed the Japanese emperor and empress for a state visit that began on Tuesday, offering the best in pomp and circumstance as the U.K. seeks to bolster its role as the most influential European nation in the Indo-Pacific region.

Charles and Queen Camilla later joined Naruhito and his wife as they looked round the displays at the iconic London Palace.

Naruhito arrived in the U.K. on Saturday ahead of a long-awaited official state visit originally scheduled for 2020 before the coronavirus pandemic delayed those plans.

The trip was intended to be the 64-year-old emperor’s first overseas visit after he ascended the Chrysanthemum Throne in 2019.

But it was delayed by COVID-19. He later attended Queen Elizabeth II ’s funeral in September 2022.

Both countries look to each other as a source of stability and mutual reassurance at a time of potentially destabilizing global political change.
