Poonachi: A Story of Our Times
Perumal Murugan’s body of work in Tamil includes ten novels and five collections each of poetry and short stories, as well as ten books of non-fiction. His latest novel, Poonachi: Or the Story of a Black Goat, was shortlisted for the JCB Prize for Literature and is an animal allegory that carries deep resonances with our troubled times. Translated into English by N. Kalyan Raman, Poonachi: Or the Story of a Black Goat is the story of a mountain goat, following her from forest to habitation, independence to motherhood, even as she carries the burden of being different and her fierce instinct for survival. Murugan’s masterly skills of narration and nuance have made him one of the most acclaimed of contemporary writers. The author and translator will be in conversation with publisher Kannan Sundaram and writer Anita Nair, speaking of the choices before us, as a society, as a nation and the increasing vulnerability of individuals, particularly writers and artists, who resist the hegemony of mass culture.
