'Laudate Dominum', Palestrina
The Mainzer Domchor was founded in 1866 by Bishop Wilhelm Emmanuel Ketteler. Since 1985 Domkapellmeister Prof. Mathias Breitschaft is the conductor of the choir. From october until july the choir sings on Sunday's and Holyday alternating with the Girls Choir of the Cathedral. The choir has 160 members. 20 beginner Boys get a special education two times a week.
After one year the Boys become a member of the Domchor and learn the repertoire of sacral choir music from Gregorian music until modern music. The choir sings regulary Oratorio's from Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Bruckner at Concert in the Cathedral.
The choir rehearse three times a week. Every Boy also has singing lessons in smaler groups. Gifted Boys also can sing Solo parts in concert and opera-productions. During the voice change the Boys become an altar server in the cathedral. MAny of the Boys later sing as men voices in the choir.
The choir was recorede several times and travelled to Germany, Italy, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Israel, Russia, the USA, Canada and Brasil.
Sometimes the choir sings in Concert halls like Alte Oper Frankfurt, Berliner Philharmonie and to opera houses in Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, Darmstadt and Mainz singing for example the 8. Sinfony by Gustav Mahler, the "War-Requiem" by Benjamin Britten or the "Magic Flute" by W.A. Mozart.
The choir is not connected to a school. The members come from Mainz and the surrounding not only for rehearsing but also spending their free time together.
