KSR Amplification - Ceres - Three Channel Preamp | Turn Any Amp With An FX Loop Into a 3-Channel Amp
Talking Segment: 7:56
In todays video we take a brief look at the KSR Amplification - Ceres - 3 Channel Preamp Pedal. A pedal capable of turning any amplifier with an FX Loop into a Three Channel Amplifier, with Clean, Crunch, and Lead channels available.
This incredibly complicated looking bit of gear is the KSR Amplification Ceres 3-Channel Preamp…
And all those knobs aren’t nearly that intimidating once you break it down.
For this demonstration we’ll be running the Ceres into the FX Return of the Friedman Runt 50.
Effectively using the Friedman as nothing more than a Power Section and Speaker.
The 3 Channels:
Channel 1: Green = Clean
Channel 2: Blue = Crunch/Rhythm
Channel 3: White = Lead/Hi-Gain
We’ll begin with the Green Clean Machine that is Channel 1
Channel 1 is designed to be straightforward with only 1 Tone Control and 1 Master Volume
Make note that Channel 1 is not designed to achieve a “pushed” or broken up clean tone
Channel 2, the Crunchy bits...
The Blue Channel is intended to be set as a foundational rhythm/crunch tone, the channel you may likely spend the most time in
Channel 2 features a full Preamp EQ section, with Treble, Middle, Bass, Gain, and Master Volume Controls.
Much like a tube amp, the Treble/Middle/Bass controls will have some overlap and influence on one another
Channels 2 and 3 also feature “Mode”, “Bright” and “Feel” Toggle Switches
The “Mode” Switch affects the overall character/aggression of the Gain in each channel
Up - For more crunch & less overall gain.
Down - For more of a Lead tone, with more saturation
Center - For the most Gain, the most aggression, and the most compression
The 2-Position “Bright” Switch toggles ON(up)/OFF(down) to provide more treble frequency content
Finally the “Feel” Switch - the toggle with the most low end texture
Up - Adds more Low-End/Bass
Down - Focuses more in the Low-Mids providing more chug/thump
Center - The overall tightest low end response (recommended for bass heavy power amps)
What’s on the inside?
The Ceres features two sets of Internal Jumpers
The first controls the overall brightness of the LED Logo (Normal/Bright)
The second set toggles the Ultra Tight mode On/Off for the Rhythm/Lead Channels
The Ultra-Tight Mode is highly recommended for players with loud, bass heavy Power Amps and it will dramatically affect the overall feel of the Low End.
Finally the White Hot Lead Channel…
Channel 3 of the Ceres is intended to be utilized as your Lead/High Gain Channel
In this channel you can toggle the “Mode” switch to the Center position, to achieve the most Gain, with the most aggressive sounding midrange and overall saturation.
Channels 2 and 3 can be set to achieve extremely similar sounding tones,
but the intended design is to set Channel 2 for your home base
and Channel 3 is the chainsaw you keep in the garage for weekend zombie slaying excursions.
