It's time for another Simmons drum cover, and this time, I went for a song by Mike + The Mechanics called Silent Running, the opener of their 1985 self-titled debut album. I don't think I am revealing a big secret when I'm telling you that this particular Mike in the name of the band is no-one else but Mike Rutherford, mainly known as guitarist and songwriter of a small British Rock group by the name of Genesis. And yes, of course you can hear that in the songwriting, in the guitar tone and as well in the production. It's pretty common for musicians and specially songwriters from famous bands to release a solo album at a certain point of time for their personal creative outlet, but in most cases, these stay rather unnoticed for several reasons. Not so Mike + The Mechanics, who managed to create countless global hits like this one (and even way bigger ones). I'm always gravitating to this particular song, because I just love its dark timbre and the unapologetic 80's production, which basically screams for the sound of some Simmons drums with a ton of gated reverb, don't you agree? 😉
