Red Sprite, a 15-year-old Thoroughbred who had a short (winless) racing career and a few foals, came to me from the Kentucky Humane Society. She was not an abuse case but she did arrive with a cribbing habit I hoped would stop when boarded in ideal conditions at quiet, spacious Atwood Farm. Alas, her habit continued. We tried distasteful hot stuff on fences, stalls; we all but eliminated anything sweet in feed; we tested a muzzle. This fall, she had a choking incident (due to cribbing while eating) and a pinched nerve in her neck (attributed to cribbing).
I heard about the leather/velcro No-No Collar created by Linda Scott at her Linda's Leather workshop in Versailles, Ky. Enjoyed a chat with Linda on tips to start her.
Tested the collar at feed time and Red Sprite accepted it well. Out of habit, she sought her cribbing spots (a screw-eye and a small iron piece of stall frame!). Couldn't really make it work, so she licked/chewed, then stood looking a little confused. So far, so good!
This video is the next day, midday before feed time. Note: the collar is not very tight, and she has considerable neck musculature from years of cribbing. This time she had her whole fence to grab and at first I feared it wasn't working. But the collar is uncomfortable if she assumes her usual close-to-the-fence, bowed neck sucking posture. With her neck slightly extended, she can't get the same cribbing satisfaction.
After a bit, she stopped, licked/chewed, got that confused look. Then turned and headed out to graze. The collar in no way
interferes with grazing, eating (she eats her feed from a floor slow feeder) or nibbling at hay. (The hay is in a slow net and is only there to keep her mouth busy for the short amount of time she's in a stall to eat. She's almost 24/7 pastured.
She seemed content with the collar, came in to eat a couple hours later. No issues. Nibbled hay instead of cribbing. Let her out, didn't even stop at the fence. She's a smart mare & made a beeline for pasture hay, so I can't assume she's cured yet.
But so far, so good! Felt confident to leave the collar on and it seems to be working.
Will post an update later.
