GREECE: ATHENS: INMATES TAKE CONTROL OF KORYDALLOS PRISON

Authorities in Greece are still trying to regain control of the Korydallos prison in Athens for a third day.

Inmates lynched and then burned a foreign inmate Friday. The unidentified convict is the fourth to die since irate prisoners armed with knives and clubs took control of the country's largest prison on Tuesday night.

Riot police rushed the Korydallos prison's central gate late Thursday... using tear gas to push back a group of prisoners who were trying to break out.

The armed police did not however storm the jail.

Police said prisoners at the Athens, Greece, facility lynched an unidentified inmate believed to be an Albanian-- Friday. They then set him on fire.

Three other convicts died the previous day from drug overdoses after they had plundered the prison pharmacy.

Platoons of riot police were stationed inside, on the roof and at the central gate to control crowds that had gathered outside.

By Friday, many inmates had returned to their cells. But a small number were still holding out in the guardhouse. Some spoke to reporters from windows above.

They demanded improved living conditions and better medical treatment at the 14-hundred inmate facility.

The prison guards also had a wish list-- and refused to go inside until it was met. They won't go back to work until prisoners are disarmed, a public prosecutor is on site, and they are given better pay and holidays.

While the guards weren't inside to give firsthand accounts, one said that he didn't think there were any more wounded.
