The 1981 Dusi Canoe Marathon, sponsored by Theragran‑M, stands as one of the most historically significant editions of the race. It marked the first time that women and Black paddlers were legally permitted to compete, transforming the event into a symbol of sporting progress during a restrictive era in South Africa.
This was also the first year the Dusi allowed K1s, ending nearly three decades of K2‑only racing. The change set the stage for a legendary performance by Graeme Pope‑Ellis, who won his ninth Dusi title — and his first in a K1 — in a time of 9:47:19
First year women were allowed to compete, but only in mixed doubles.
Andre and Daphne Hawarden became the first mixed crew to finish, placing 16th overall.
First Black competitor: Simon Mkhize made history as the Dusi’s first Black entrant.
First K1 event in Dusi history, opening the door for solo racing.
This footage captures the raw, pioneering spirit of the 1981 Dusi — long portages, low‑tech gear, minimal safety support, and the unmistakable grit of early‑era river racing. It documents a watershed moment in the event’s evolution, both athletically and socially.
