Exploring Place, Belonging and Identity in Dumfries | A Short Documentary | In-Between: Dumfries

Описание: Titled 'In-Between: Dumfries', the programme was a partnership with 'Intersections', the University of Newcastle’s public art research group. It marked the final leg of a journey exploring the application of art in the pursuit of market town regeneration through a series of debates and seminars.

In-Between: Dumfries focused on involving local people in a conversation about their town. We began by asking what people thought was important about Dumfries and how they would like to see it evolve in the future.

To achieve this, we invited six artists – a street artist, a composer, a sculptor, a clothes designer, a landscape architect, and a filmmaker – to spend three months in Dumfries. They worked alongside local residents to develop artworks that were showcased across the town during a week in November.

Crucially, the projects were all rooted in concepts about Dumfries and involved local people in their creation. The 'In-Between: Dumfries' week featured a concert, a fashion show, paste-up street art in the closes, and a two-day conference with attendees from across the UK. It also included a community meal for 100 people and the unique opportunity to ‘Nithscope’ – viewing the riverbed through a specially designed, inverted periscope.

Everything was free and open to all. Those who had collaborated with the artists brought their families and friends, helping the conversation about a positive future for Dumfries to grow.
