There has been a lot of commentary about Igor Stravinsky's skills as a conductor, and the popular consensus is that he was never one of the best, but it is also agreed that his recorded performances of "Le Sacre", especially the present one, are exceptionally good.

We have posted restorations of his prior recordings from 1929 and 1940, and this one completes the cycle.

This is also the first in our series of restorations of early stereo recordings, and there are very good reasons for doing so. Collectors may have noticed, (especially those who are older), that there can be a very big, and disappointing, difference between original stereo releases and the re-issues of them on steaming or CD made after 2000 or so.

We cannot detail the reasons for these differences here, but much of it is due to the limitations of aging masters, and the need to preserve them for future generations. Many re-issues simply cannot be from the original master tapes.

Our stereo restoration series is based upon comparisons of modern digital sourcing to analogue sources of original vintage.

It is possible with modern technology to recapture that sound in most cases with high definition audio, and the present post is the result of conforming digital mastering to analogue sources well over half a century old.

By using a mastering resolution that translates well into the present streaming format it is possible to get very close to what these recordings originally sounded like when new.
