Shadow Defence Minister Andrew Hastie says Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and the Labor government had a "clear-cut moment" to lead Australia with the Chinese naval incident.
Mr Albanese met with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the APEC Summit last week and mentioned he had discussed various things with the leader.
"He had an opportunity last week at APEC to raise this very significant incident with Xi Jinping, and... well it appears that he did not," Mr Hastie told Sky News Australia.
"Now we have the Chinese government deflecting and indeed you could say gaslighting us.
"I think Peter Dutton was right to use those words."
