Abstract: In this talk, I will share how my journey began in a small village in Cameroon, where I was already trying to understand the world around me without knowing it was related to mathematics. Becoming a mother at 17 was not an easy step, but it gave me strength and direction. I continued my studies in France and now work as a postdoctoral researcher in Canada.
I will also present part of my research on diseases affecting sockeye salmon. A parasite and a virus, when acting alone, do not always kill the fish. But when they infect the fish at the same time, the risk of death becomes much higher. With the help of mathematical tools, I study how these two infections interact and at what point they become dangerous for the fish. This helps us understand more about how diseases work in nature, and how math can help us see those patterns clearly.
This talk was part of the Black Heroes of Mathematics Conference 2025, which took place on 1 and 2 October 2025 at De Morgan House, London and online.
