On 3 November a young male black flying fox in Buderim on the Sunshine Coast, found himself stranded in a Bismarck palm approx 8 metres above the ground. It was unusual for him to be in this location at this time of day, so experts from Australia Zoo Wildlife Rescue were called in, who had the necessary equipment to come help him. Definitely a two person job!
The rescuers were ever mindful of his wellbeing and their own safety, giving him plenty of breaks but getting the job done as swiftly as possible.
Named Kiwi, he was transported to Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital where he checked out ok by the vets and was placed with a carer for rehydration and to ensure he was 100% before being released back into the wild!
Great job by the Australia Zoo team and the carer!
Flying foxes are amazing creatures, seed dispersers and pollinators of our native trees and forests. They get a bit of a bad rap but are vital to our ecology. You've heard the koala mantra: "No tree; no me"? Well with these guys it's "No me; no tree".
Whilst this little guy was very vocal he was not hurt in any way during the rescue.
