Some cartoon canines out there could take a lesson in building traps and catching prey from these arachnids!
Trapdoor spiders dig small tunnels in the soil, hinging doors to the entrances using silk. They camouflage the doorways by covering them in bits of plants and dirt, lay out trip lines made of silk, and then wait patiently in their burrows for the right opportunity. When small bugs or vertebrates cross the silken trip lines, they alert the spider inside, who pops from its hiding place, grabs the hapless critter and pulls it in the tunnel to eat it.
Their sneaky style of hunting makes trapdoor spiders very successful predators, but some animals have learned ways to protect themselves. This woodlouse demonstrates one way to get a trapdoor spider to leave you alone-- armour your body in tough plates, and roll into a tight little ball when threatened! Those spiders won't want anything to do with something so tough to eat, and they'll put you right back where they found you!
