It took me 20 years to understand this simple technique

I used to think I invented a brand-new picking technique during my guitar warm-ups. It turns out it already exists, but the logic behind it changed everything for my playing—and it might do the same for yours.
The "Stutter" in your Speed
Most guitarists hit a wall because their picking hand has to "skip" or reset its position when moving between strings. If you're using standard alternate picking, you often find yourself fighting the physics of the motion rather than flowing with it.
The Logic/The Problem
After slowing my playing down by 50%, I realized that "conservative" picking (economy picking) creates a natural flow by ensuring your pick is always in the correct position for the next string.
I break down the Mathematical Method to master this:
Odd Number of Hits: Continues the flow in one direction.
Even Number of Hits: Changes the direction of your movement.
New Flavors for your Solos
This isn't just a drill; it's a way to rewrite your solos. By thinking about how many notes you play per string, you can integrate this flow to reach higher speeds with less motion. It's the essential first step toward mastering sweep picking.
