After Marilyn died in 1962, Mamie found more roles on the stage than she ever did on film. She acted in various stage productions, including performing Marilyn's role in a production of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. The most notable role that Mamie had in her career before essentially retiring before the end of the millennium was in the 1958 film Teacher’s Pet, in which she starred alongside Clark Gable.

Mamie Van Doren fell in love with Clark Gable on the set of Teacher’s Pet, though Clark was only one of many male celebrities that Mamie was romantically linked to during her prime. Other celebrities that the sexually adventurous Mamie apparently had casual encounters with include Frank Sinatra, Johnny Carson, and Elvis Presley. She had four short-lived marriages before trying the knot with her fifth husband in 1979, and the two are still living together in Newport Beach, California, today!
