Civilians suffered immense hardships as supplies ran out and the city burned. By February 13, 1945, Budapest fell to the Soviets, marking one of the bloodiest urban battles of World War II. The fall of Budapest opened the road to Vienna and hastened Nazi Germany’s collapse in Central Europe.
