When CCFR and Cottleville firefighters arrived on scene of this working house fire, we were faced with a large addition on the rear of the home that was already fully involved, with fire extension into the attic of the main residence. We went “defensive” on the rear addition and “offensive” on the house, remaining outside the building to control the fire in the rear and working inside the rest of the house to keep it from taking the entire home.
The deep-seated fire in the attic quickly compromised the structural roofing components of the main residence. Our Incident Safety Officer in the rear of the building, the Cottleville FPD Battalion Chief, recognized the signs of impending collapse and evacuated the interior crews. Less than a minute after crews exited, the roof collapsed over where they were working.
The cause of the fire has not been determined.
