The arrest of two Catholic nuns from Assisi Sisters of Mary Immaculate (ASMI) on July 26 in Chhattisgarh has sparked outrage. The two nuns were arrested from Durg Railway Station while they were being accompanied by three women. The Chhattisgarh Police charged the Kerala nuns with human trafficking and religious conversion under BNS.
The two nuns, Preeti Mary and Vandana Francis, were arrested along with Suhman Mandavi, a resident of Narayanpur. A report by TNN suggested that the women were being offered jobs as kitchen helpers. The matter came to light after a ticket examiner asked the girls about their tickets.
