STORYLINE
Thousands of Lebanese civilians defied an Israeli-imposed travel ban and returned to their war-ravaged communities in southern Lebanon on Monday under a UN-brokered ceasefire.
In Qana, where 28 people were killed in a July 30 Israeli airstrike, people trickled back to assess the damage.
Displaced people began to return to nearby Saddiqine, which was also heavy bombed.
"The destruction here is very massive, but we have come back despite Israel," said one man who was returning.
The UN-brokered resolution has temporarily halted fighting between Israeli forces and Hezbollah militants in Lebanon.
According to the Lebanese government - displaced a quarter of its population, and caused billions of US dollars of destruction, gave many a chance to return and salvage what was left of their homes and businesses.
Israel underlined that it has not lifted its threat to destroy any vehicle on the roads - except aid shipments - across most of south Lebanon.
The UN cease-fire went into effect at 8 am (0500GMT) on Monday, after a night of heavy airstrikes on Lebanon.
At least 791, including 689 civilians have been confirmed dead by Lebanese police, security officials, civil defence and hospital authorities, 34 Lebanese soldiers and 68 Hezbollah militants, although others gave conflicting figures.
The Lebanese government's Higher Relief Council said 1,071 Lebanese had been killed in the conflict.
Israeli security officials said they have confirmed the deaths of 165 Hezbollah fighters and estimated that about 300 others had been killed.
Authorities said 148 Israelis have been killed in the fighting, including 109 soldiers and 39 civilians.
