In August 1979, hundreds of astronomy enthusiasts gathered in a public park in Salem, Oregon, to witness a rare total solar eclipse. At precisely 10:04 a.m., daylight faded as the moon fully eclipsed the sun, casting the park into two minutes and forty-nine seconds of complete darkness. Families stood shoulder to shoulder, focused skyward through eclipse glasses as the temperature dropped and the crowd fell silent.

When the light returned, eleven-year-old Christopher Vale—who had been standing beside his father moments earlier—was gone.

His eclipse glasses were later found resting in the grass, but despite roughly 200 people present during totality, no one reported seeing a struggle, hearing a cry for help, or noticing anything out of place. The sudden disappearance during such a brief and extraordinary moment complicated the investigation from the very beginning.
